In March 2020, I began a visual and sonic collaboration with violinist Clara Lyon and cellist Hannah Collins that would creatively sustain us over many months of quarantine. In response to a photo of a collage I texted to them late one night, the musicians sent me a spontaneous recording of a ukulele and a melodious whistle.
Only 42 seconds in length, the image and sound together came to be known as Guida, Italian for “guide.” Guida marked the beginning of a fulfilling project that routed us through the isolation of the time. The daily exchange of image and sound evolved into an inspired new body of works.
